I also think turkey is something you don't eat as often the rest of the year, so it's nice to have a special meal commemorating that day. I think ham is something people can make and have most other times of the year and doesn't make the day as significant. People look forward to turkey on Thanksgiving all year round and that would be my protein of choice on that date.

I just like the way ham tastes better. Typically no one in my family can cook a moist turkey. It is almost always dry.

I feel you can do so much more with ham in terms of flavor. We like to use pineapple and cherries, tooth picked to it while it cooks, and add brown sugar.
