Technology had changed this war into a straight-out, last-man-standing, in-your-face, toe-to-toe, hyper-combat fought in the ruins of Europe. The grunts lived on grunt candy and green monsters, painkillers and speed. So it's drive on and keep doing the drugs to get through it. Trying to live to face one more day.
War has always been about living and dying. Until this war blurred the lines. Mike had died three times only to be salvaged each time and sent back. Maria was having a hard time distinguishing between a virtual death and a real one. Johnny was struggling with salvaging these men and women only to see them torn apart again.
Christian McCloud was trying to tell their stories. He would download their memories and shape them into virtual stories he posted on the web for millions to experience. But their memories were too strong and they were changing him. He was becoming one of them. He wanted to continue but he wasn't sure where it would lead him.

Mike had died three times and he didn't want to die again. Maria was having a hard time distinguishing between her virtual deaths and reality. Each time she died in virtual reality she began to wonder if she would wake up. Johnny was getting tired of 'saving' Marines only to have to bring them back from death again when they had sent back to the line. Technology was changing everything. Up was down and down was up.
Christian McCloud was just trying to tell their stories. But when he downloaded their memories for his stories he found he was becoming one of them. He was a stream of consciousness journalist the software was supposed to give him distance. But it didn't they weren't just memories shaped into virtual experiences anymore they were part of him. If Christian wasn't able to separate himself from their memories he didn't know where he would wind up.
